Most Portlanders probably didn’t feel the 1964 quake that shook the Copper River Delta in Alaska. But for one of our local avian residents, it had a profound effect. The dusky Canada goose, which winters exclusively in the lower Columbia River Valley, saw its summer nesting grounds along the Copper River drastically altered by the seismic upheaval. With their numbers in swift decline, wildlife officials acted to protect the geese’s winter habitat in the Northwest by establishing Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in 1965.
